Fashion and art in Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s surprise video

Beyoncé and Jay-Z released a surprise album over the weekend, basically a third installment in the story of their marriage. The series started with Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” in 2016 and the revelation that Jay-Z had likely cheated on our Queen Bey. The next in the series was Jay-Z’s equally emotional “4:44,” which was released almost exactly a year ago, on June 30, 2017. Now we have the couple credited jointly as The Carters on the album that dropped over the weekend, titled “Everything is Love.” Given the timeline and the new title, the Carters are presenting an ultra united front that speaks to the kind of team-player relationship we can all aspire to.

It’s worth noting that Beyoncé has recently been sneaking history into her videos and appearances, for instance delivering an education on historically black colleges in her April Coachella performance. This video for the new track, “APES**T,” shot in the Louvre in Paris, is following suit. Pay close attention to the imagery in the video – you’ll catch both recognizably famous pieces of art as well as lesser known pieces, alongside the usual instantly iconic fashion moments (both of them draped in Versace!):
